De Schadijkse Bossen is een gebied wat vroeger bestond uit uitgestrekte heidevelden. Boeren lieten er schapen grazen en staken er plaggen. Zo onstonden kale plekken in de heide en kreeg de wind vat op het open liggende zand. Dit woei op tot zandduinen. Om de zandverstuivingen te lijf te gaan, is een groot deel van het gebied aan het eind van de 19e eeuw beplant met bos. Vandaar het heuvelachtige karakter in een groot deel van het bos.
