Los Bosques de Schadijkse son una zona que solía consistir en extensos campos de brezos. Los agricultores dejaban pastar ovejas y cortaban laderas. Así surgieron áreas despojadas en la breza y el viento comenzó a afectar la arena expuesta. Esto se convirtió en dunas de arena. Para combatir las movilizaciones de arena, gran parte de la zona fue reforestada a finales del siglo XIX. De ahí el carácter accidentado en gran parte del bosque.
