The Schadijkse Bossen is an area that used to consist of extensive heath fields. Farmers let sheep graze there and cut sods. This created bare spots in the heath and allowed the wind to take hold of the exposed sand. This blew up into sand dunes. To combat the sand drifts, a large part of the area was planted with forest at the end of the 19th century. Hence the hilly character in a large part of the forest.
