I Boschi di Schadijk sono un'area che un tempo era composta da ampie brughiere. I contadini mandavano a pascolare le pecore e raccoglievano torba. Così si crearono aree spoglie nella brughiera e il vento poté agire sulla sabbia esposta. Questa venne sollevata fino a formare dune di sabbia. Per combattere le tempeste di sabbia, gran parte dell'area fu piantata a bosco alla fine del XIX secolo. Da qui il carattere collinare di gran parte del bosco.
