La zone naturelle unique sans voiture de Gerendal entre IJzeren et Schin op Geul est notamment connue pour les nombreuses espèces d'orchidées que l'on peut y rencontrer. En mai et juin, elles peuvent être admirées dans le jardin de la maison du garde forestier. Dans la région, vous pouvez croiser un troupeau de moutons qui paît les pelouses calcaires. Quelques centaines de mètres après la maison du garde forestier, il y a une bifurcation à gauche où un sentier forestier de 300 mètres, la Gerende Berg, mène au plateau plus élevé de Margraten et à la Keutenberg. Cette pente a une inclinaison de 10,7 %.
