Dopo aver resistito per due giorni nei pressi di Groot-Oosterzele, mercoledì 22 maggio 1940, l'esercito belga si ritirò verso la Leie e il canale di drenaggio. Di conseguenza, Groot-Oosterzele passò sotto il controllo dell'occupante tedesco. Un certo numero di reggimenti tedeschi si radunarono qui a Landskouter per marciare da lì verso Vurste.
