A partire dall'inizio del XIX secolo non fu più permesso seppellire i morti entro le mura cittadine. Il vecchio cimitero attorno alla chiesa si trasferì quindi in Molenstraat. Il nuovo cimitero fu in uso dal 1804 al 1950, quando fu aperto il parco cimiteriale di 18-augustlaan.
La cappella neogotica della famiglia Pottelsberghe de la Potterie è l'unico resto del cimitero di Molenstraat. È l'ultima dimora di 8 membri di questa ricca famiglia che aveva un castello a Overschelde. La cappella funeraria fu costruita nel 1870 con il materiale di demolizione della vecchia chiesa medievale di Sant'Gertrude e fu collocata in modo prominente nel cimitero.
