La grotta fu abitata nel tardo periodo preistorico , approssimativamente tra il 12.000 e il 17.000 a.C. , da cacciatori-raccoglitori della cultura magdaleniana .
Si tratta di una grande grotta calcarea lunga circa 20 m, larga 6 m e alta 12 m : uno spazio naturale impressionante formato dall'erosione della Lesse.
Tra i reperti archeologici si annoverano utensili in selce e resti ossei di animali e esseri umani.
Il nome si riferisce ai Nutons , piccole creature del folklore delle Ardenne, che si ritiene vivano nelle grotte. Sono paragonati a piccoli spiriti della terra o ninfe dei boschi. Aiutavano nei lavori artigianali di notte in cambio di cibo.
