Il pittoresco paesino di Stavelot si trova nascosto nel profondo della valle boscosa dell'Amblève.
Stavelot deve la sua origine a San Remaclo, che nel 648 fondò un monastero benedettino. L'abbazia cresce sistematicamente fino a diventare un centro di potere religioso e secolare. Fino al 1795, l'anno in cui l'abbazia venne soppressa, governava completamente in modo indipendente, proprio come il Principato Vescovile di Liegi.
L'abbazia fu soppressa sotto il dominio francese. Negli impressionanti edifici del monastero sono ora ospitati il municipio e alcuni musei. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, la città subì gravi danni. Tuttavia, in alcune strade è ancora possibile scoprire splendide case a graticcio.
