La chiusa a pozzo di Minden è stata costruita dal 1911 al 1914 nell'ambito della costruzione del canale Mittelland, nel nodo idrico di Minden, come discesa nord verso il fiume Weser, fornendo così il collegamento più breve tra il canale Mittelland e il Weser. Contemporaneamente, è stata costruita una chiusa sostanzialmente identica sul canale Dortmund-Ems, la chiusa a pozzo di Henrichenburg. La chiusa di Minden ha una lunghezza utile della camera di 85 metri e una larghezza di 10 metri. Grazie ai bacini di compenso integrati lateralmente nella costruzione, con una capacità di riempimento di 7300 m³, è, a differenza della discesa sud tramite la chiusa superiore e inferiore, idonea al risparmio idrico ed era quindi all'avanguardia della tecnologia al momento della sua costruzione.
