Il mulino del vescovo si trova sul fiume Honigbach di fronte alla cosiddetta Klinke, dove un tempo si trovava un varco nella cosiddetta fortificazione di Stadthagen. Questa posizione si trova a circa un chilometro a sud-est al di fuori delle mura cittadine dell medievale Coesfeld.
Nelle sue fondamenta, il mulino del vescovo è l'edificio più antico della città di Coesfeld nel Münsterland. Le sue origini risalgono al XII secolo. Tuttavia, il riferimento spesso citato all'anno 1214 riguardo alla diga è un errore; il numero corretto è 1714 e si riferisce a una ristrutturazione.
