L'Orologio solare fu costruito nel 1753 durante il regno di Carlo III per ordine di Francisco de Rubio y Peñaranda, governatore di Santo Domingo. L'orologio è situato di fronte al Museo delle Case Reali. All'epoca della colonia, questo museo era la Real Audiencia e il Palazzo della Capitán Generale. L'orologio fu costruito affinché i magistrati potessero vedere l'ora dalle loro stanze. L'orologio ha due facce: la Sud-Est dove si vedono le ore del mattino e la Sud-Ovest dove si leggono le ore del pomeriggio. Le ore sono segnate da un gnomone o una placca metallica la cui ombra segna le ore sulle facce. Questo pezzo (con le sue caratteristiche) è uno dei pochi che rimangono funzionanti in America.
