Il ospedale "Hôpital de la Salpêtrière" è stato uno dei più importanti e noti centri di psichiatria e neurologia in Europa. Qui il medico Duchene de Boulogne nel 1842 studiò quale fosse l'effetto dei trattamenti elettrici su epilettici e spastici. Qui studiò anche le espressioni facciali applicando corrente sul viso. Sono noti i ritratti del calzolaio con i muscoli facciali paralizzati che faceva strane smorfie (foto). Charles Darwin utilizzò anche le foto di Duchenne nel suo lavoro "The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals".
L'ospedale fu costruito per ordine del re Luigi XIV. Molti nomi già conosciuti lavorarono o studiavano alla Salpêtrière, tra cui Pierre Janet, Jules Cotard, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Philippe Pinel e Alfred Binet.
