Het ziekenhuis "Hôpital de la Salpêtrière" was een van de belangrijkste en bekendste centra voor psychiatrie en neurologie in Europa. Hier onderzocht de arts Duchene de Boulogne in 1842 wat het effect was van electriciteitsbehandelingen op epileptici en spastici. Hij onderzocht hier ook de gelaatsuitdrukkingen door stroom te zetten op het gelaat. Gekend zijn de beelden van de schoenmaker met verlamde gezichtsspieren die rare grimassen trok (foto). Charles Darwin zou ook nog Duchennes foto''s gebruiken in zijn werk "The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals".
Het ziekenhuis werd gebouwd in opdracht van koning Lodewijk XIV. Vele inmiddels bekende namen waren werkzaam of studeerden aan het Salpêtrière, waaronder Pierre Janet, Jules Cotard, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Philippe Pinel en Alfred Binet.
