Das Krankenhaus "Hôpital de la Salpêtrière" war eines der wichtigsten und bekanntesten Zentren für Psychiatrie und Neurologie in Europa. Hier untersuchte der Arzt Duchene de Boulogne im Jahr 1842, welche Auswirkungen elektrische Behandlungen auf Epileptiker und Spastiker hatten. Er untersuchte hier auch die Gesichtsausdrücke, indem er Strom auf das Gesicht anlegte. Bekannt sind die Bilder des Schuhmachers mit gelähmten Gesichtsmuskeln, der seltsame Grimassen zog (Foto). Charles Darwin soll auch Duchennes Fotos in seinem Werk "The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals" verwendet haben.
Das Krankenhaus wurde im Auftrag von König Ludwig XIV. erbaut. Viele inzwischen bekannte Namen waren am Salpêtrière tätig oder studierten dort, darunter Pierre Janet, Jules Cotard, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Philippe Pinel und Alfred Binet.
