Hospitalet "Hôpital de la Salpêtrière" var et af de vigtigste og mest kendte centre for psykiatri og neurologi i Europa. Her undersøgte lægen Duchene de Boulogne i 1842, hvad virkningen af elektricitetsbehandlinger var på epileptikere og spasmodiker. Han undersøgte her også ansigtsudtryk ved at sætte strøm på ansigtet. Kendt er billederne af skomageren med lammede ansigtmuskler, der trak mærkelige grimasser (foto). Charles Darwin skulle også bruge Duchennes billeder i sit værk "The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals".
Hospitalet blev bygget på ordre af kong Ludvig XIV. Mange nu kendte navne arbejdede eller studerede på Salpêtrière, herunder Pierre Janet, Jules Cotard, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Philippe Pinel og Alfred Binet.
