El hospital "Hôpital de la Salpêtrière" fue uno de los centros más importantes y conocidos para la psiquiatría y la neurología en Europa. Aquí, el médico Duchene de Boulogne investigó en 1842 cuál era el efecto de los tratamientos con electricidad en epilépticos y espásticos. También estudió las expresiones faciales al aplicar corriente en la cara. Son conocidos los retratos del zapatero con músculos faciales paralizados que hacía muecas extrañas (foto). Charles Darwin también utilizaría las fotos de Duchenne en su obra "La expresión de las emociones en el hombre y los animales".
El hospital fue construido por encargo del rey Luis XIV. Muchos nombres que ahora son conocidos trabajaron o estudiaron en Salpêtrière, entre ellos Pierre Janet, Jules Cotard, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Pierre Marie, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Philippe Pinel y Alfred Binet.
