La sua supremazia in montagna era tale che nella tappa verso Nizza, si è tranquillamente preso un bicchiere di vino in un caffè e ha aspettato i suoi inseguitori, che avevano già un'ora di ritardo. Grazie alle sue capacità di scalata, ha facilmente vinto il secondo Tour, che aveva più salite del precedente.
