La costruzione di questo monumento, iniziata nel 1914, era inizialmente destinata a rendere omaggio alla ricca storia della città di Soissons. Il tragico inizio del XX secolo decise altrimenti: quando fu completato nel 1926, divenne il monumento ai caduti su cui è incisa la dedica: "A Soissons immortale ai suoi figli caduti gloriosamente per la Patria". La statuaria di questo monumento a forma di piramide a tre gradini è opera di Albert Bartholomé (1848-1928), mentre i bassorilievi sono stati realizzati da Raoul Lamourdieu (1877-1953). Sui quattro lati del monumento, dediche ed elenchi dei nomi delle vittime si alternano a bassorilievi in cui è rappresentato il famoso episodio del vaso di Soissons del 486.
