L'ingegnere francese Frédéric Sauvage testò la propulsione ad elica nel 1832 su una chiatta sull'Ourcq.
Il 15 gennaio 1832, a Honfleur, nel vecchio molo e con una piccola imbarcazione, dimostrò in un esperimento pubblico che la propulsione a elica era tre volte più veloce della propulsione a pale.
Può essere considerato uno degli inventori della propulsione a elica applicata alle imbarcazioni.
