Il vino d'oro scorre nella regione di Sauternes, conosciuta in tutto il mondo per i suoi famosi vini bianchi dolci. La regione di Sauternes è attraversata dal Ciron. Questo modesto affluente della regione delle Landes è essenziale per lo sviluppo della botrytis cinerea che, in autunno, crea i grandi vini dolci, descritti da Mauriac come "un'esagerazione dello squisito".
La regione del Sauternes si scopre dolcemente, ricca di mille dettagli, con i suoi onnipresenti muri di pietra che rivelano l'abbondanza di calcare appena sopra il terreno.
