I bagni romani hanno sorgenti di acqua calda naturale. L'acqua che ribolle dal terreno a Bath è caduta come pioggia sulle vicine colline di Mendip. Percola attraverso le falde acquifere di calcare a una profondità compresa tra 2.700 metri (8.900 piedi) e 4.300 metri (14.100 piedi), dove l'energia geotermica innalza la temperatura dell'acqua tra 64 °C e 96 °C.
