Il monastero fu fondato nel 1847 dalle suore francescane di Heythuysen. Successivamente vi fondarono anche una scuola privata e una scuola per l'insegnamento, Maria Immaculata. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, il complesso subì ingenti danni e nel 1948 i padri passionisti vi fondarono un seminario, San Paolo della Croce, che in seguito fu chiamato Gabriëlcollege. Qui venne anche fornita istruzione secondaria. Dal 1923 fu la R.K. Kweekschool Maria-Immaculata. Tra il 1977 e il 1993, il complesso divenne un collegio per marinai e una scuola di formazione per la navigazione fluviale e marittima della Fondazione Reale Educazione per la Navigazione. Nel 1997 il complesso fu demolito, ad eccezione delle facciate della scuola per l'insegnamento. Sono state costruite abitazioni e appartamenti e il quartiere ora si chiama Maasstaete.
