La villa fu costruita nel 1916 dall'architetto R.B. Sleumer su commissione di Harm Smedema, agricoltore a Barmerheerd in Barmerweg 10 a Doodstil. Smedema fu membro del consiglio comunale del precedente comune di Kantens dal 1913, in seguito anche assessore e dal 1926 fino alla sua morte nel 1927 sindaco di questo comune. Sebbene la villa venga anche chiamata villa del sindaco, questa casa non è mai stata una residenza ufficiale, ma sempre una casa privata.
