La casa sulla Turfmarkt fu acquistata nel 1667 dall'ammiraglio Jan den Haen con il premio di 10.000 sterline inglesi, che aveva ricevuto per la sua conquista della Great Charity nella Battaglia di Lowestoft durante la Seconda Guerra Inglese. In seguito, il vice-ammiraglio Roemer Vlacq visse in questa abitazione. Quest'ultimo fece ristrutturare l'edificio nel 1757 con una facciata in rococò in pietra naturale. Vlacq era uno dei cittadini più ricchi di Gouda. Conservava in questa casa la sua vasta collezione di circa cento dipinti. La sua cantina dei vini era la più grande della città.
