Prima che si verificasse l'alluvione di Santa Elisabetta, il Mark faceva una curva severa in direzione sud e poi a nord-ovest. In quest'area si estraeva torba e c'era l'influenza dell'Abbazia di Thorn, che possedeva diritti di decima qui. Durante questa alluvione, il Mark ha iniziato a tagliare quella curva. L'area all'interno di questa ex curva e dell'attuale Mark, ora circondata da Mark, Halse Vliet e Leurse Haven, fu bonificata intorno al 1507 da Engelbrecht van Etten. Così nacque la Polder di Zwartenberg.
Nella polder ci sono 5 turbine eoliche da 2 MegaWatt ciascuna, le quali sono state messe in funzione a febbraio 2013.
