Avant la crue de Sainte-Élisabeth, la Mark faisait un virage aigu vers le sud puis vers le nord-ouest. Dans cette région, de la tourbe était extraite et il y avait l'influence de l'abbaye de Thorn, qui possédait ici des droits de dîme. Pendant cette crue, la Mark a raccourci ce virage. La zone à l'intérieur de cet ancien virage et de la Mark actuelle, désormais entourée par la Mark, le Halse Vliet et le port de Leurse, a été mise en polders vers 1507 par Engelbrecht van Etten. Ainsi est née la Polder de Zwartenberg.
Dans le polder, il y a 5 éoliennes de 2 MegaWatt chacune, qui ont été mises en service en février 2013.
