Vor der Sint-Elisabeth-Flut machte die Mark eine scharfe Biegung nach Süden und anschließend nach Nordwesten. In diesem Gebiet wurde Torf abgebaut und es gab Einfluss der Abtei Thorn, die hier Zehntrechte besaß. Während dieser Flut schnitt die Mark diese Biegung ab. Das Gebiet innerhalb dieser ehemaligen Biegung und der heutigen Mark, jetzt umschlossen von Mark, Halse Vliet und Leurse Haven, wurde um 1507 von Engelbrecht von Etten eingedeicht. So entstand der Zwartenbergse Polder.
Im Polder stehen 5 Windturbinen mit jeweils 2 Megawatt, die Mühlen wurden im Februar 2013 in Betrieb genommen.
