Onder het gebied tussen Bad Reichenhall, Hallein en Ischl ligt een dikke zoutlaag. Deze zoutlaag wordt al eeuwenlang ontgonnen. Typische culinaire specialiteiten van de Salzkammergut zijn gerechten zoals Kaiserschmarrn (geraspte pannenkoek), Krapfen (gefrituurde deegbolletjes) en Lebkuchen (peperkoek). Het gebied staat bekend als het Salzkammergut. Het Salzkammergut is door UNESCO uitgeroepen tot Werelderfgoed. UNESCO beschreef het als volgt: "De menselijke activiteit in het prachtige natuurlandschap van het Salzkammergut begon in de prehistorie, met de winning van zoutafzettingen al in het 2e millennium voor Christus. Deze grondstof vormde de basis voor de welvaart van de regio tot halverwege de 20e eeuw, wat terug te zien is in de prachtige architectuur van de stad Hallstatt."
