In Umicore Olen werd het radium uit het uranium van de Congolese mijn Shinkolbwe gewonnen. Het was die mijn die tevens het uranium zou leveren voor de atoombommen die een einde zouden maken aan Wereldoorlog II. De installaties hier werden gebouwd in 1922. Vijf jaar later leverde Olen ongeveer 35% van het totale volume aan radium op de wereldmarkt. In het totaal ging dat om 180 gram. Umicore maakte deel uit van SGMH of de Société Général Métallurgique de Hoboken. Hier werd ook koper verwerkt uit de mijnen van Katanga.
