De naam Lesterny vindt zijn oorsprong in de naam Lesternivis die veranderde in Lesterneias . In de Keltische taal betekent ster of staer rivier en de radicale ny is afgeleid van niacum wat wonen betekent. Het is daarom zeer waarschijnlijk dat Lesterny betekent "woning aan de rand van de beek" of "van de rivier".
