Op de kaart van Ferraris uit 1778 was dit gebied als wastine of woeste grond gekarteerd. Tussen 2008 en 2010 is hier opnieuw 3 hectare bos gekapt. De boomstronken werden uitgefreesd en de strooisellaag werd verwijderd. Het zaad van struikheide kan tot 100 jaar kiemkrachtig blijven. Om de heide in stand te houden wordt dit gebiedje begraasd door schapen. De poelen zijn het ideale biotoop voor kikkers, salamanders en libellen.
