Vanaf oktober 1914 bezetten Duitse troepen de gemeente Hooglede. Heel wat diensten en voorzieningen werden er ingericht, waaronder ook een aantal begraafplaatsen. De huidige begraafplaats vond haar oorsprong in de begraafplaats ‘Hooglede Ost’, aangelegd in 1917. Na de oorlog werden Duitse graven uit de omgeving samengebracht. Nu rusten hier ongeveer 8.200 Duitse soldaten. Achteraan de begraafplaats vind je de ‘Ehrenhalle’, gedecoreerd met een groot kleurrijk mozaïek.
In het nieuw onthaalpaviljoen vind je meer uitleg over de begraafplaats. Een wandellus neemt je vanaf hier mee naar andere WOI-sites in Hooglede.
