Bij de Romeinen was het de gewoonte hun doden buiten de stadsmuren te begraven. De meeste burgers werden begraven op een gemeenschappelijke begraafplaats, maar voor vooraanstaande burgers werden grafheuvels opgeworpen. Van deze grafheuvels, ook tumuli genoemd, zijn er langs de Via Belgica tientallen opgericht waarvan er drie op het huidige grondgebied van Tongeren liggen; de Herstappeltombe en de tumuli van Koninksem aan de Paardsweidestraat en de Romeinse Kassei.
