In 1960 werd de Nederschelde, een arm van de Schelde, ter hoogte van de Reep afgesloten om plaats te maken voor... een parkeerplaats. 1.000 jaar geschiedenis opgeofferd ten dienste van de auto. Het heeft de Gentse bevolking enige tijd gekost om de pil te slikken. Natuurlijk waren er geurhinder, maar er bestaan tegenwoordig oplossingen voor dit probleem. In 2002 besloot de stad de oude samenvloeiing van de Schelde en de Lys te herstellen. De werkzaamheden duurden 16 jaar en het resultaat is de moeite waard.
