De site bevindt zich in het Westen van Hainaut, ten zuiden van de stad Doornik, genaamd "Faubourg de Valenciennes". Het is een oude kalkovens gebouwd van kalkstenen blokken, waarvan de aanwezigheid verbonden is met de vele steengroeven die vroeger in de regio werden geëxploiteerd. De constructie bestaat uit 13 bogen, waarvan er twee zijn afgesloten, en blijkt bijzonder gunstig te zijn voor de winterslaap van vleermuizen. Zo werden er in de afgelopen jaren 2012 tot 2016 maar liefst vijf soorten vastgesteld: Daubenton's vleermuis (Myotis daubentonii), baardvleermuis of Brandt's vleermuis (Myotis mystacinus/brandtii), Natterer's vleermuis (Myotis nattereri), geknikte vleermuis (Myotis emarginatus) en gewone vleermuis (Pipistrellus pipistrellus).
