In Gerhagen-Tessenderlo staat een panoramische toren op ‘de zandberg’, een oude landduin. Deze werd ‘de VVV-toren van de zandberg’ genoemd. Hij gaf een panoramisch zicht op de zee van groen in Gerhagen en doorprikt het vooroordeel dat Tessenderlo alleen maar ‘grijs van de industrie’ is. In 1999 werd hij gesloopt wegens betonrot. Toen werd een nieuw metalen exemplaar opgericht dat hoger is dan de vorige: 18.75 meter en 100 treden. De VVV-Tessenderlo bekostigde deze tweede toren en stond nadien het bouwwerk gratis af aan het gemeentebestuur van Tessenderlo die nu eigenaar is.
