In de slag bij Stockach op 25 maart 1799, vier dagen na de slag bij Ostrach, viel het daar verslagen Franse leger onder generaal Jourdan opnieuw de Oostenrijkers aan die achter aartsduke Karel aanhadden, om generaal Massena te ontlasten, die naar Feldkirch oprukte. De Fransen trokken zich na kostbare beginoverwinningen in de richting van Villingen terug. Tijdens de slag viel aan Oostenrijkse zijde prins Karl Aloys van Fürstenberg. Generaal Jourdan werd daarna als legerleider vervangen.
