Napoleon III besloot deze imposante rots te gebruiken als ankerpunt voor de dijk van Port du Refuge die hij wilde aanleggen.
Deze rots werd dus met het land verbonden door een houten brug (vervangen door een metalen loopbrug die aan Gustave Eiffel wordt toegeschreven) en doorboord door een tunnel zoals de Atalaye, om de aanvoer van steenblokken bestemd voor de bouw van de dijk mogelijk te maken. Deze rots dankt zijn huidige naam aan het Mariabeeld dat in 1865 op de top ervan werd opgericht.
