Het Palais Bourbon werd tussen 1722 en 1728 gebouwd voor Louise Françoise de Bourbon, hertogin van Orléans en overspelige dochter van Lodewijk XIV en Madame de Montespan. Het was het werk van vier opeenvolgende architecten: Giardini, Lassurance, Jean Aubert en Jacques Gabriel. Na de dood van de hertogin werd het Palais Bourbon uitgebreid en tijdens de Franse Revolutie geconfisqueerd. Nadat het nationaal eigendom was geworden, bood het korte tijd onderdak aan een gevangenis, een polytechnische school en de Kamer van Afgevaardigden tijdens de Restauratie en het Tweede Keizerrijk, voordat het vanaf 1879 de zetel werd van de Nationale Vergadering.
