De cultus van de Zwarte Madonna gaat terug tot de 6e eeuw, toen een Syrische kolonie werd gevestigd in deze stad, die toen Avenum heette. De primitieve kerk (1170-1180) herbergt het miraculeuze beeld van de heilige Pol. Jeanne d'Arc bad voor Onze Lieve Vrouw van Wonderen. Tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen werd het beeld verbrand en de kerk geruïneerd (1562). Aan het eind van de 16e eeuw werd een nieuw standbeeld ingehuldigd, hetzelfde dat nu wordt overwogen. Na de Revolutie werd het gebouw gerestaureerd. De kerk brandde af in 1940, maar niets in de kapel werd door de brand getroffen. Een nieuw gebouw werd gebouwd en ingehuldigd in 1966.
