Detail van de pilaren. Breccia van schelpen was een populair bouwmateriaal. Gemakkelijk te bewerken, maar zeer solide, zoals je nog kunt zien. Deze rotsen dateren uit het Plioceen. In de Plioceen tijd zonk de graben van de Apheios-rivier en de vlaktes van Elis aanvankelijk sneller dan ze konden worden gevuld met puin van de bergen in het midden van de Peloponnesos. Dit gebied was onder water, en hier werden veel mariene en brakwaterafzettingen afgezet. Inclusief de schelpkalkstenen die als bouwstenen in Olympia werden gebruikt, zoals je hier kunt zien. Je kunt de schelpen nog steeds in de rots herkennen.
