Het werd gestolen op 27 april 1974, samen met een Goya, twee Gainsboroughs en drie Rubens uit het Russborough House van Sir Alfred Beit door een gewapende IRA-bende.
Het schilderij werd uiteindelijk teruggevonden tijdens een uitwisseling in augustus 1993 op de luchthaven van Antwerpen.
