De historische Vesting Hellevoetsluis is in het begin van de 17e eeuw aangelegd. Hellevoetsluis was de eerste marinebasis van 's Lands Admiraliteit.
De Zilvervloot van Piet Heyn is hier aan land gebracht en daarna in triomf langs de steden van Holland naar Amsterdam gevoerd.
De Vesting heeft voor een belangrijk deel zijn historische staat behouden, maar herbergt ook interessante en goed ingepaste nieuwbouw.
Historisch zijn het Tromphuys en jet (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, de Cruyttoren en het Jan Blanken Dock (een uniek droogdok).
