Schoondijke is een echt landbouwdorp. Het bestond al in 1248. Het heette toen Vuyldijke. Tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog werd het verwoest. In 1652 verschenen er weer huizen. Aanvankelijk was het toen bekend als Willemsdorp. Later gaven de bewoners de voorkeur aan Schoondijke, ongetwijfeld geïnspireerd door de oorspronkelijke naam. Hoewel het belang van de landbouw is afgenomen, is het agrarische karakter rondom Schoondijke nog duidelijk aanwezig. De landbouwsfeer tref je in het dorp ook aan in de vorm van beelden, zoals Het Paard, De Zaaier en Het wassende graan.
