Hier in de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen werd de laatste wilde beer van Nederland gevonden. Een archeoloog vond bij toeval een fossiel van een berenpoot. Het is die van een wilde bruine beer en wellicht één van de laatste beren die hier in de vroege middeleeuwen rondliep in Nederland. Het was de gepensioneerde archeoloog Wim Kuijper die de botten toevallig vond. Destijds was op deze plek een dicht, vochtig en onaangeroerd oerbos. De C14-methodedatering toontde aan dat de beer hier tussen 880 en 970 na Christus in dit woud ronddwaalde. Tegenwoordig komt deze Ursus arctos of Europese bruine beer alleen nog voor in de Alpen, de Pyreneeën en de Balkan.
