Het Mercatorplein heeft een duidelijke link met de cartograaf Mercator, want op het plein staat een grote wereldbol getekend. Een beter symbool voor deze multiculturele regio van de stad kon men niet bedenken. Als je over het plein loopt zie je er niet zoveel van maar als je op het verhoogde 'oor' van het plein staat zie je de kaart duidelijk getekend. En men heeft zelfs de Mercatorprojectie gebruikt!
