Goedereede was sinds de 14 eeuw letterlijk een goede reede (ankerplaats) voor zeeschepen. Goedereede verkreeg al in 1312 stadsrechten en is nog steeds de enige stad op Goeree-Overflakkee. Later begon de haven te verzanden en in de 18e eeuw lag de havenmond geheel buiten het stadje. Dat betekende het einde van Goedereede als levendige en welvarende handelsstad. Echter met zijn smalle straatjes, prachtige oude huizen en intieme haventje heeft Goedereede nog niets aan charme ingeboet.
De enige Nederlandse Paus - de Utrechter Adriaan Boelens (2 maart 1459 – 14 september 1523), Adrianus VI - heeft enige tijd in Goedereede gewoond. Zijn woonhuis is nu het hotel/restaurant De Gouden Leeuw.
