Op de spoorlijn Maarssen-Utrecht voerde wetenschaper Christophe Buys Ballot op 3 juni 1845 experimenten uit rond het Dopler effect (het effect dat hoge tonen verlagen als ze uitgestuurd worden vanuit een voorbijrijdend voertuig). Hij plaatste een aantal hoornisten op de trein om een constante toon te blazen. Waarnemingen langs de spoorlijn moesten horen hoeveel toonverschil er was bij het voorbijrazen. Dopler had berekend dat bij 70km/uur een b een halve toon hoger zou klinken (als een c).
Het experiment mislukte wegens het niet contant toonhoogte houden, de variabele snelheid van de trein en het niet goed kunnen horen door al het treinlawaai.
