In 2008 werd tot op het substraat gegraven bij het uitgraven van Ground zero. Er werd daar een enorm ondergrond gat ontdekt dat niets te maken had met het gebouw of de aanslag van 9-11. Het was een énorm 'pothole' of 'Gletschertopf'' dat ooit door gletsjerwater was uitgeschuurd. Deze zou dateren van de laatste ijstijd die ongeveer 120 000 jaar geleden startte. Het tot 3km dikke ijspakket kwam tot aan Manhattan.
